Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.
The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
