One Piece Ends a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline concludes, the animated series will take a three-month hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will release two seasons every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — incorporating more material, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” However, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime previously took a half-year break that began in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the comic to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to deliver fans with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the anime adapting one chapter, with some instead covering more material or additional to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the art can vary widely between installments and the following. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each year, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
