Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in approximately millions in dollars in damage to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
